Summer Cool Down Drinks: The Necessary Guide to Florida Re-Hydration

By Louisa Hallett on June 18, 2017

Florida summers are hot and humid. If you’re anything like me, you hate the feel and smell of sweat! So you won’t leave the house unless it’s into a cool and refreshing pool or an air conditioned car that is headed for another air conditioned destination. However, those relaxing days at the pool can drain your body of water and other hydrating supplements that your body needs to not feel over heated. So here are some of my favorite summer cool down drinks to have with you during your pool days!

Raspberry Peach Lemonade

Raspberry Peach Lemonade is probably my absolute favorite to make. The natural sugars from the fruits are essential to replenishing your bodies hydration and despite popular belief, natural sugars are good for your body’s natural insulin production – especially in this Florida heat! Myself being prone to overheating and having passed out multiple times, the first thing everyone tells you is to eat something sugary and re-hydrate your body. So here is a great way to do both!

  • Ingredients (Raspberry Peach Puree):
    • 4 fresh peaches pitted and diced (you can also use canned diced peaches)
    • 1 cup fresh raspberries
    • 1 and ¼ cups water
    • Ingredients (Simple Syrup):
      • ½ cup granulated sugar
      • ½ cup water
      • Then you can use your own homemade recipe for lemonade, however, I just use store bought lemonade.
      • If you are over 21 and would like a little alcohol kick, I would recommend some of your favorite chilled white wine, about ¼ cup in the mixing bowl
      • Optional Garnishes:
        • Raspberries
        • Peaches (sliced)
        • Mint Sprigs (These are my favorite to add because they add some extra freshness)
  • Instructions:
    • Add diced peaches, raspberries and water to a food processor or blender and process until pureed.
    • Place a sieve over a large mixing bowl and pour the puree into the sieve. Use the back of a large spoon to push the puree around so the liquid falls through the sieve. Make sure chunks of the puree don’t get into the liquid that is in the mixing bowl. Set mixing bowl aside
    • Add granulated sugar and ½ cup water to a small saucepan and heat over medium heat until sugar is dissolved in the water and stirring occasionally. Bring to a boil for about three minutes until it has a syrup consistency. Set aside to slightly cool.
    • Pour about 5 cups of lemonade into the mixing bowl, or more if you prefer a more bitter taste. Pour in cooled syrup mixture and stir to combine.
    • Store covered in refrigerator until ready to serve. Serve chilled with garnishes if you chose to do so. Again, I highly recommend the mint leaves!

Frozen Raspberry Peach Sangria

Any type of Sangria is my absolute guilty pleasure. Making them frozen was probably the best idea I have ever had! If you do not like raspberries or peaches but have another sangria you would like to try frozen, I highly recommend. This is just my favorite sangria that I would like to share with you all.

  • Ingredients
    • One bottle of red wine (I like pinot noir)
    • 1/3 cup brandy
    • One cup frozen raspberries
    • One cup frozen peaches
    • One navel orange, peeled
    • One cup ice cubes
    • One lime (juiced)
    • Two tablespoons agave nectar
    • Optional Garnishes:
      • Sliced oranges
      • Sliced raspberries
      • Sliced limes
      • Instructions
        • Add all the ingredients to a blender, mix until smooth and serve! So simple and absolutely amazing.

Blueberry Lemonade

I have seen this drink floating around all over Pinterest and Instagram lately. Not only is it super pretty, but it tastes amazing if you’re into sweet and salty. Blueberries are a natural antioxidant that promotes re-hydration and natural toxin body cleansing. Give this drink a try!

  • Ingredients
    • ½ cup granulated sugar
    • One cup blueberries
    • ¾ cup lemon juice (if you prefer it a little sweeter just use store bought lemonade)
    • Instructions
      • To make the syrup, combine the sugar and one cup water in a medium saucepan over medium heat, stirring until the sugar is completely dissolved. Stir in blueberries and bring to boil. Reduce heat and allow to simmer until the blueberries have broken down (takes about 3 minutes).
      • Drain the mixture through a sieve and let cool.
      • In a large pitcher, whisk together blueberry syrup and lemon juice (or lemonade) and add five cups of water. Place into refrigerator until chilled.
      • Serve with ice or blueberries.

Mocha Mint Frappe

Frappes are beautiful and when there is coffee in them, they’re perfect. If you’re feeling a bit of that extra sweet tooth or need a little “pick me up,” this is the drink for you!

  • Ingredients
    • 2 cups International Delight Iced Coffee – Mocha
    • 2-3 scoops chocolate ice cream (your favorite of course)
    • 3-4 ice cubes (I eye ball it)
    • ¼ teaspoon mint extract
    • Whipped cream for topping, if desired
    • OPTIONAL: if you need some extra kick, add a shot or two of coffee (I do)
    • Garnish Ingredients
      • Mint leaves
      • Chocolate syrup
      • Instructions:
        • In blender, add International Delight Iced Coffee and then some scoops of the chocolate ice cream.
        • Add in mint extract and some ice cubes and blend until smooth.
        • Pour into cup, add whipped cream and garnishes and there you have it!

These drinks have been so good to me as a Florida native! Refreshing, hydrating, sweet. For the alcoholic drinks, I encourage you to drink responsibly and if you are underage to not add the alcohol at all to these drinks. I hope you try one or all of these drinks out!

Happy summer!
