3 Homemade Toppings That Can Make Your Food Tasty

Toppings are a way of being creative– some people would prefer to eat their food how it comes, but in my opinion, toppings simply make everything better.  For instance, an ice-cream cone topped with chocolate and sprinkles, a chocolate covered cake topped with strawberries, or even a pizza topped with chicken and pineapples. Creating dishes can never do any harm and it can be fun to make something new or recreate the flavor of something you already love. Food is a primal, everyday part of our lives, yet rich with mystery. Adding certain sauces or toppings only enhances the flavor of the original dish. Trying new foods is always interesting because you never really know what you like unless you try it.

One thing about food is that you can be creative as you want, with no limits. Meaning, that there are several ways to make the same dish, or something different. Creating different foods can bring about creativity, skill and development; not everyone knows how to use a stove and whip up something interesting, but with time you can possess these skills. I love that food has no limitations, you can eat what you want with whatever you want, because who says you can’t? I find joy in creating new dishes, so I decided to share with you the best homemade toppings that you can add onto your dish, or even to snack on.

1. Pico De Gallo

This isn’t a meal, it’s a topping, but it’s yummy. Oh, I absolutely love Pico de Gallo—the freshness of tomatoes, the clean flavor of cilantro, the cool, crisp wonderfulness of it all. Pico De Gallo originates from Mexico; it is Mexican cuisine and it is known as the main topping of many foods, such as fajitas, tacos, and even chili. If you think of all the colors in the ingredients, it also represents the Mexican flag.  I would personally prepare my tasty Pico with these ingredients:

  • Chop red onions – ½

  • 2 scallop stalks

  • Tomatoes

  • Cucumber

  • 1 whole lemon

  • 1 whole lime

  • Cilantro

  • Salt & pepper

Pico De Gallo can be used on other dishes as well , such as rice bowls, baked potato and even nachos.  It’s the perfect topping to add on most hot dishes.

2. Guacamole

Guacamole is one of the healthiest toppings you can add on any dish, and it’s tasty as well. Guacamole is originally from Mexico and it consist mainly of avocados. Guacamole is considered a healthier option than most toppings, simply because it’s not loaded with salt. Some of my favorite dishes/sides to eat with guacamole are tortilla chips, chicken rice bowls, and wraps. I also love that it’s fast and very simple to make. Here are the list of ingredients on how I create my very own guacamole:

  • 2 Avocados

  • pepper

  • 1 Lime or lemon

  • Chopped Tomatoes

  • ½ cup cilantro

  • ? chopped red onion

One of the perfect tips to making a great guacamole is to always use ripe avocado, I think it gives the guacamole a better texture when it comes to mashing them together. Once the guac is mashed add the rest of the ingredients and mix them in together into one small bowl. The best part about making this dish is that you can enjoy guac with almost anything.

3. Salsa

Salsa is another hot and zesty topping to add to your dish! It can be mild, hot, or spicy. Salsa is typically known as an Mexican dish and is vibrant in color and rich in flavor. This can be considered as a great topping as well because of it’s unique flavor. In addition, salsa can be placed on just about anything such as dips for nachos, rice bowls, and even tortilla chips. This recipe will give you a kick to your food and have your taste buds wanting more. The key ingredients to making my homemade salsa would consist of:

  • Chopped Tomatoes

  • Salt & pepper

  • Cilantro

  • ? red onion

  • Hot sauce

  • Lime or lemon juice

  • 1 cucumber

  • Crushed red peppers

The crushed red peppers I use to give its spice and flavor added along with the hot sauce. Mix all of the ingredients into a small bowl and you have a homemade salsa. It makes a great serving for dishes and toppings!

These are some of my favorite toppings to eat on most of my dishes. Not only does it adds flavor but it’s simple to make and can be done right in the comfort of my own space. If you’ve never tried any of these toppings, and opened to the idea of trying new things, make sure to add one of these toppings on your next grocery list and turn up the flavor!
